Tyler Perry Taps Taraji P. Henson To Lead New Netflix Drama ‘Straw’

Netflix

Tyler Perry is cooking up another Netflix original, and this one’s got a heavy-hitting cast and a gripping story. Titled Straw, the upcoming film will be directed by Perry himself and adds to his growing slate of titles for the streamer, following Mea Culpa and the newly launched Beauty in Black.

Straw centers on a single mother whose life spirals after a series of unfortunate events. According to the official synopsis, she finds herself tangled in an unimaginable situation and quickly becomes the prime suspect in a world that barely notices her. It’s shaping up to be a powerful narrative exploring how society treats women living on the edge, with Perry’s signature mix of suspense and social commentary.

Fronting the cast is Taraji P. Henson, with a standout supporting line-up that includes Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, Glynn Turman, Sinbad, Rockmond Dunbar, and Mike Merrill. Behind the scenes, Perry is joined by longtime collaborators Angi Bones and Tony Strickland, who will also serve as producers.

The film marks the latest chapter in Tyler Perry’s ongoing creative partnership with Netflix. Under his multi-year, first-look deal, Perry continues to write, direct, and produce original films and series for the platform. Beyond Straw, Perry is currently working on Six Triple Eight, a historical film, and Beauty in Black, a drama series that recently launched on Netflix.
