  • Heineken launches “Bar de Change” at O.R. Tambo International Airport
  • SA travellers can buy beers at local prices and redeem them in Europe
  • The campaign tackles high beer costs abroad with a simple, cultural twist

Heineken is flipping the travel experience for South Africans with a smart, culture-led campaign that makes enjoying a beer overseas feel just like home.

Introducing the “Bar de Change” a playful take on the traditional Bureau de Change, now live at O.R. Tambo International Airport. Here, travellers heading to Europe can purchase Heineken beers at South African prices before they even board their flight. Instead of exchanging currency, they receive digital vouchers that can be redeemed for beers at selected partner bars across Europe.

The insight is simple but real. A Heineken in Europe can cost up to three times more than it does locally, making a casual drink feel like a luxury. This activation removes that friction entirely, letting South Africans enjoy the same social moments abroad without worrying about the exchange rate. One beer here equals one beer there.

Currently, the vouchers can be redeemed in selected bars across countries like Germany and Italy, with more locations expected to follow.

More than just a clever pricing mechanic, Bar de Change taps into something deeper. It is about keeping connection, familiarity and culture intact no matter where you are in the world. In true Heineken fashion, it turns a simple beer into a shared global experience, making sure South Africans can keep the vibe going wherever they land.
